Rear axle assembly & differential. Wire wheel conversion kits
The rear axle case for a wire wheel axle is shorter than that for a disc wheel, it is not practical to shorten a disc wheel axle case to make a wire wheel axle and the only way to convert a car to wire wheels is to fit a conversion kit consisting of wire wheel hubs and new halfshafts which are longer than standard wire wheel axle halfshafts.
New axle cases are not available but we offer a repair service for axles where the end bearing surface and oil seal surface have worn. This involves welding/sleeving the ends and grinding to size. Where necessary the retaining nut threads are repaired. Please inquire for details.
N.B. Originally all cars up to 82892 disc wheels & 82748 wire wheels were fitted with 10 spline halfshafts and differential gears. After that point 25 spline halfshafts and differential gears were fitted. However, somewhere along the way the factory decided to make some 26 spline halfshafts and differential gears, it was thought that these were only fitted to Twin-Cams but they have been found in seemingly original 1600 axles and some Twin-Cams are known with 25 spline axles. To be absolutely certain you MUST count the splines carefully. A 25 spline halfshaft will fit into a 26 spline differential but will not take any load.
N.B. The standard ratio was 10/43 for all 1500 and 1600 Mk1 cars, 10/41 for 1600 Mk11 cars.
