Ignition system
Distributors: Two different types of distributor were fitted to the TD & TF. All TD’s up to chassis No TD24488 were fitted with the DKY4A type distributor numbered 40162. Later TD’s and all TF’s were fitted with the D2A4 type distributor numbered 40368 on TD’s and 40367 on TF’s. The difference being the advance curve. The D2A4 type is prone to the top alloy part coming loose from the steel base, this allows variable timing and dwell and is difficult to repair. All types use the same points, rotor arm and cap but the base plates are a different size.
NOTE: Modern fuels have made it possible to increase the performance of the XPAG engine in the TD & TF without any adverse effect on reliability. The advance curve used in the original distributors was designed when the cars were new to suit fuels available in the later 40‘s and early 50’s and whilst they are satisfactory they can be improved upon. If you distributor is in good condition and can be re-used by replacing points, condenser etc., then it is perfectly usable but if it has a worn shaft and body why not replace it with our modern 45D type unit which gives improved performance on modern fuels, both leaded and unleaded and is ideal for both standard and competition engines.
